Great Barrington — On November 8, at 7 p.m., the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington will host Silkroad’s updated “American Railroad” program, a project that revisits the history of the Transcontinental Railroad through a multicultural musical lens.
The project presents a musical exploration of the cultures that were first connected by the building of America’s Transcontinental Railroad. We offer an Instructional Guide for teachers with 11 lessons based on this Silkroad Ensemble project plus a Student Guide for learners.
In this lesson, students will examine the role the railroads played in the growth of cities and towns in the American West through the analysis of songs, images, and artifacts. Students will also explore the impact of the railroads on the cultural diffusion of art, literature, and music of the diverse populations settling in the west. “Done.”
