The Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) is a development in the navigational chart system used in naval vessels and ships. With the use of the electronic chart system, it has become easier for a ship’s navigating crew to pinpoint locations and attain directions.
ECDIS (pronounced “EHK-diss”) replaced the paper chart as the primary means of navigation on most commercial vessels. It provides a real-time, constantly updated picture of the ship’s position, movement, hazards, charted depths, coastlines, traffic, and environmental conditions.
ECDIS provides continuous position and navigational safety information. The system generates audible and/or visual alarms when the vessel is in proximity to navigational hazards.
