Lucknow is the capital city of Uttar Pradesh state, northern India. It is located roughly in the center of the state, on the Gomati River about 45 miles (72 km) northeast of Kanpur. In 1775 it became the capital of a Mughal province. It has since grown to be the state’s most populous city.
