Students for whom TAKS is a graduation requirement, including former TAAS and TEAMS examinees, may pursue the following options to receive a Texas high school diploma.
In 2007, the TEA introduced TAKS (Accommodated), TAKS-M, and TAKS-Alt to assess students receiving special education services. Determination of the appropriate assessment is made by the ARD committee based on each individual student's instructional supports and current level of functioning.
The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) is the Texas state standardized test previously used in grades 3-8 and grades 9-11 to measure the extent to which a student has learned and is able to apply the defined knowledge and skills at each tested grade level.
The alternate assessments allowed for TAKS are SAT, ACT, TSI, and STAAR. Former TAKS, TAAS, and TEAMS examinees should take only the appropriate part of the alternate assessment he or she needs to fulfill testing graduation requirements. Students who entered ninth grade prior to school year 2011-12 are required to take the TAKS Exit Level exam to meet Texas graduation requirements. TAKS XL is an online exam to be administered three times each year – Fall, Spring, Summer.
