Ryu was created by game designer Takashi Nishiyama, who was inspired by the South Korean-born martial artist Mas Oyama while designing the character. For his second appearance, Ryu's design changed from a young fighter to a skilled karate practitioner.
Name & Etymology Ryu is named after his original creator, Takashi Nishiyama. Early in development he was at first planned to be named Ryū'ichi (隆一) but it was later shortned to Ryu (隆) much like the playable hero from Capcom's 1986 arcade top-down brawler Avengers: Hissatsu Buraiken which was also co-developed by Nishiyama.
