Remington 870 production began in 1949, the shell lifters were a dull chrome plating; around 1967 Remington added polish chrome to the shell lifters provided smoother feeding. The "silver spoons" production ceased around 1975 with serial # pre-fix "T" to gun metal "blue" shell lifters.

This website (Remington Model 31 - Wikipedia) indicates the model 31 was made from 1931 to 1949. Another (Remington Manufacture Dates) says a two letter code on the barrel reveals the year of manufacture. My barrel is stamped (twice) ZZ, near the receiver, which that chart shows as being made in 1953 (and that Z was used in 1931).
