Pawar has served three terms as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and held cabinet positions in the Union Council of Ministers, including Minister of Defence under P. V. Narasimha Rao and Minister of Agriculture under Manmohan Singh.
Pawar joined the youth wing of the Indian National Congress (Congress Party) and in 1964 became its president. Mentored by Maharashtra senior politician Yashwantrao Chavan, Pawar was elected as a member of the Maharashtra state legislative assembly in 1967.
