Serving alongside the Rassvet and Poisk mini-research modules, Nauka conducts scientific experiments and stores research equipment. Originally built as a backup for Zarya, the very first module of the ISS, Nauka 's construction was halted in the late 1990s, when it was about 70% complete.

The Russian “Nauka” Multipurpose Laboratory (MLM) docked to the space station July 29 following a launch from the Baikonur Cosmondrome in Kazakhstan on July 21.
The Nauka module is equipped with a five-component radio system playing several important roles in its mission, especially during the planned eight-day solo flight from the initial orbit to the International Space Station, ISS.
As large as the other two main modules built by Russia and launched two decades ago, Nauka will expand living space, accommodate more scientific experiments, and has a robotic arm provided by the European Space Agency.
