Note however that someone asking you Wie geht's? is almost certainly asking about you, not about how something is going. To ask you how your work is coming along, someone would ask (Wie) kommst du voran? or possibly Geht's voran?.
The most similar phrase in English seems to me "what's that?" (I'm not native in English and could be wrong). Why is "wie" used here? In other words, if "Wie bitte?" is expanded in its full, what would it be? As a side question, is there any (commonly used) expression using "was" to mean the listener did not catch what the other was saying?
