Jean-Édouard Vuillard (French: [ʒɑ̃ edwaʁ vɥijaʁ]; 11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color.
Édouard Vuillard was a French painter known for his small-scale interior works that combined flat patterns with delicate color relationships. Édouard Vuillard’s paintings demonstrate his ability to incorporate ornamental elements within a realistic environment.
As well as his smaller paintings, Vuillard executed from 1892 to 1937 large decorative schemes, including stage scenery. He was elected to the Institut in 1938. This painting was the left half of a decorative panel commissioned by Jean Schopfer, a writer who published under the pen name Claude Anet.
Many of Vuillard's paintings of the turn of the century are small in scale and depict apparently mundane interiors or record everyday episodes in domestic, middle-class life.
