The Baobab Tree

I spotted this large Baobab Tree, Adansonia digitata, in Ft. Lauderdale today. It is on the corner of US1 and Griffin Rd., just south of downtown and on the SE corner of the airport. Noticed it was also flowering

Wow, this brought back some memories! It is spelt Baobab. As kids in Zimbabwe we used to eat the fruit of the baobab tree. Just getting the edible parts out of the hard shell and the tough fibres within was a mission. I still remember the bitter sweet taste. The tree is enormous. The circumference of many was at least 100 feet.

I spotted this nice Baobab Tree (Adansonia digitata) specimen near downtown Delray Beach, FL (between Palm Beach and Ft. Lauderdale). Give it another 100-200 years and it will look like the giant trees in Africa !

Baobab trees are truly impressive and amazing looking trees. On our recent trip to Madagascar, Kim and I visited Morondava on the west coast, and spent a good amount of time a bit inland from Morondava, enjoying the incredible sight of hundreds and hundreds of baobab trees sprinkled all over a large area there.

These vines in Africa can get incredible thick and look almost like a strangling form of a baobab tree. I haven't found any good photos of them online, but was wondering if anyone has heard of this plant or knew the scientific name? And better yet, if any of them are in cultivation? Here is an ok...
