Ramayan is an Indian television series based on ancient Indian Sanskrit epic of the same name. The show was originally aired between 1987 and 1988 on DD National.

Ramayana, shorter of the two great epic poems of India, the other being the Mahabharata (“Great Epic of the Bharata Dynasty”). The Ramayana was composed in Sanskrit, probably not before 300 bce, by the poet Valmiki, according to widely accepted Hindu tradition.

Most Indians grew up watching Ramanand's Sagar Ramayan (1987) which aired on Indian state TV and remains the most view mythological serial with over 650 million viewers.
The Ramayana describes a love story between Rama, an ancient King, and Sita, who is captured by Ravan, the King of Ceylon. Rama lays siege to Ceylon and wins back Sita. The parallels to the Iliad are obvious, but the details are very different.
The Ramayana is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient Indian literature, the other being the Mahabharata. Attributed to the sage Valmiki, it narrates the life of Prince Rama of Ayodhya, his wife Sita, and his loyal companion Hanuman.
Ramayana contains 24,000 verses [sloka] arranged into numerous cantos [sarga] which are contained in 6 books as mentioned earlier. Each chapter, sarga, will be given briefly in english prose at its start and each verse will be rendered into Anglo-Sanskrit transliteration using ITRANS transliteration scheme developed by Avinash Chopde.
