The Otomi (/ ˌoʊtəˈmiː /; Spanish: Otomí [otoˈmi]) are an Indigenous people of Mexico inhabiting the central Mexican Plateau (Altiplano) region. The Otomi are an Indigenous people of the Americas who inhabit a discontinuous territory in central Mexico.
According to a census compiled in 2015 there are some 670,000 Otomi in Mexico, the 5th largest ethnic group in the country. Like the Maya, their culture died but the people survived. However, only a small number of this number speak their regional language.
Otomi is an Oto-Manguean language spoken by about 240,000 people in central Mexico, especially in the states of México, Puebla, Veracruz, Hidalgo, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Tlaxcala and Michoacán.
The Otomi language, known as Otomi or Hñahñu, is a crucial component of their cultural identity. It belongs to the Oto-Manguean language family and has several dialects, reflecting the geographical diversity of Otomi communities.
