Internally, on the server motherboard there is a 3-port ethernet switch: one port is the shared ipmi/ethernet port on the back, one port internally connects to the IPMI, and one port internally connects to your server. One thing you can do to eliminate ipmi is to stop the listener service, then run a temporary listener like nc (netcat) and see if you can connect to it from a client (you can use netcat again here too).
