This study focuses on the relationships between scientists’ knowledge breadth and depth strategies and disruptive performance as well as the role career age plays in these relationships. The data were from 651,831 publications authored by 12,278 biomedical scientists from the PubMed Knowledge Graph (PKG) dataset.
Research published in Nature Neuroscience indicates that while generalists activate multiple brain networks to integrate diverse information, specialists show intense activity in particular areas, indicating a deep, focused cognitive approach.
We compare the performance of both generalist and specialist models on a smaller, controlled test set consisting of min (1000, len (dataset ["test"])) samples, and provide a detailed comparison using various metrics. The exact size of each test set is given in Appendix D.
