Yahya (Arabic: يحيى, romanized: Yaḥyā), also spelled Yehia, is an Arabic male given name. In the Qur'an, Yahya also appears as the Arabic equivalent of the given name of the prophet John the Baptist in Islam. [a] For this reason, Yahya is now a common name in the Muslim world.
Prophet Yahya (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was a humble servant of Allah (سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ) who found peace and solace in nature. He often slept in mountains, fields, caves, or holes in the ground. His nights were spent crying and praising Allah (سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ) for His countless blessings.
Yahya is a direct Quranic name for boys. It has a special significance since it was a divinely created and chosen name, as retold in the Surat Maryam 19:7. O Zachariah, We bring you good news of a son whose name shall be Yahya. We have not given such a name to anyone before.
Arabic scholars speculate that the name Yahya came from the root word “Hayaa” meaning life, because he brought life to his mother’s barren womb. It is also said that the name was given because Allah elevated him in the earth with his faith and piety, and to be guided as a messenger.
