Doré, also spelled as “dore” or “doree,” is a term used in the context of precious metals, particularly gold and silver. Doré refers to an alloy or mixture of gold and silver that is produced as an intermediate product during the process of refining gold or silver ores.

As an illustrator, Dore created engravings for the books of Balzac, Rabelais, Milton, Dante, Edgar Allen Poe, and Lord Byron. He was commissioned to illustrate a version of the English Bible, which was extremely popular, allowing for the foundation of his own gallery, the Dore Gallery.

What is gold dore? Gold doré (from the French word doré, meaning ‘golden’ or ‘gilded’) is a semi-pure alloy of gold and silver, usually produced at the site of a gold mine.
