An operational taxonomic unit (OTU) is an operational definition used to classify groups of closely related individuals. The term was originally introduced in 1963 by Robert R. Sokal and Peter H. A. Sneath in the context of numerical taxonomy, where an "operational taxonomic unit" is simply the group of organisms currently being studied. [1]
"OTu brings the textbook to real life! OTu has been a vital asset for my doctorate level occupational therapy students and should be incorporated into every OT program."
Each resulting cluster, or OTU, is treated as a single taxonomic unit for further analysis. A representative sequence is chosen for each OTU and compared against established databases to assign a likely taxonomic identity, such as a genus or family.
