The 2009 animated film The Secret of Kells tells a fictional story of the creation of the Book of Kells by an elderly monk Aidan and his young apprentice Brendan, who struggle to work on the manuscript in the face of destructive Viking raids.
The Book of Kells is considered to be Ireland’s greatest cultural treasure. Its distinctive Celtic knotwork, iconic initials and animal based designs have inspired legions of artists and creatives across the centuries.
The site is famous for having one of largest collection of high crosses in Ireland and also being one of the oldest Christian monasteries in Western Europe. There is some dispute about whether the Book of Kells was written here or was actually started in Iona and transported from there to Kells.

Before the Book of Kells was relocated to Dublin in the 17 th century, it was held at a monastery at Kells, in County Meath, on the eastern side of Ireland, where it stayed for centuries.
