Ebenezer Scrooge (/ ˌɛ.bɪ.ˈniː.zər ˈskruːdʒ /) is a fictional character and the protagonist of Charles Dickens 's 1843 novella A Christmas Carol.

Widely considered one of Dickens’s most famous characters, Ebenezer Scrooge represents the greedy wealthy people in Victorian England. As a subscriber to the Poor Laws, he would proudly fulfill his duties by supporting the prisons and workhouses and ignoring the less fortunate.
In the allegory that is A Christmas Carol, Scrooge is the very antithesis of the Christmas spirit, symbolizing selfishness and apathy. His character serves as a vehicle by which Dickens is able to critique a more general, but no less cruel, upper class.
Scrooge is shown his own past, and the sight of his neglected childhood Christmasses begins to explain why he began his downward spiral into misery. Scrooge is scared and regretful when he sees the vivid images of the Christmas Yet to Come, which predictably leaves him dying alone.
That night, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his late business partner, Jacob Marley — condemned to wander the earth dragging the chains he forged in life through greed and selfishness.
