Elektro is a robot built by J.M. Barnett, Jack Weeks Sr., Harold Gorsuch, [1] and other engineers at the Westinghouse Electric Corporation ' s Mansfield, Ohio, facility between 1937 and 1938.
The Elektro was constructed from aluminum on a steel frame. It was 210 cm tall, weighing 120 kg. It was capable of performing 26 routines (movements), and a vocabulary of 700 words. Sentences were formulated by a series of 78 RPM record players connected to relay switches.
Elektro was one of a family of robots that evolved out of Westinghouse’s switchgear business. By the early 1920s, the company had succeeded in developing fully automatic electrical substations, and its engineers were looking for ways to improve them.
