Handbooks and Manuals Handbooks and manuals are ACI documents that provide tools and guidance to the practitioner on applying design, construction, and inspection standards. Handbooks typically contain charts, tables, and examples to facilitate design of concrete structures, formwork, and reinforcement detailing. Examples are provided to illustrate the steps in designing or detailing. Manuals ...
"Unfold Form" is a lightweight and reusable formwork system for vaulted concrete structures. This type of formwork uses geometry to shape a floor that uses up to 60 percent less concrete and 90 ...
Formwork molds the concrete to the desired size and shape, and controls its position and alignment. It is a temporary structure that supports its own weight and the freshly placed concrete, as well as construction live loads including materials, equipment, and workers.
Other sections are devoted to formwork for bridges, shells, mass concrete, and underground work. The concluding chapter on formwork for special methods of construction includes slipforming, preplaced-aggregate concrete, tremie concrete, precast concrete, and prestressed concrete.
The remainder of the report advises the formwork engineer/ contractor on the best ways to meet the specification requirements safely and economically. Separate chapters deal with design, construction, and materials for formwork. Considerations peculiar to architectural concrete are also outlined in a separate chapter.
A. Form release agents ease formwork removal, extending the useful life of a form and improving the smoothness and texture of concrete surfaces. Two main types are available: barrier and chemically active. Barrier-type agents (examples include diesel oil, wax, and silicone) create a barrier between the form and the concrete.
The eighth edition of Formwork for Concreteis dedicated to the memory and achieve- ments of M. K. Hurd, author of the first seven editions and constant advocate for safety, economy, and quality of formwork. Mary Hurd (1926-2013), a civil engineering graduate of Iowa State University, began her career as a staff engineer with the American Concrete Institute in 1947. In the early 1960s, she was ...
