CERT stands for Community Emergency Response Team — an all-volunteer team that learns basic disaster response skills, so they can help people in their neighborhood or workplace before, during, and after an emergency.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program is an all-risk, all-hazard training. This valuable course is designed to help you protect yourself, your family, your neighbors and your neighborhood in an emergency situation.

CERT members are prepared and can apply the learning they have received to give critical basic support until help arrives. The free CERT Basic Training is the cornerstone of the program and provides research-validated subject matter to teach participants what to do before, during and after disasters.

Initially, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) programs were developed to assist communities in taking care of themselves in the aftermath of a major disaster when first responders are overwhelmed or unable to respond because of communication or transportation difficulties.
