Most chemical elements are represented symbolically by two letters, generally the first two in their name. In some cases, the first letter together with some other letter from their name was used, particularly when their first two letters had already been allocated to another element.
For chemistry students and teachers: The tabular chart on the right is arranged by the symbol. The first chemical element is Actinium and the last is Zirconium. Please note that the elements do not show their natural relation towards each other as in the Periodic system.
In many cases, these come from the first one or two letters of the element’s English or Latin name. Some, however, use letters from older names or other languages where a direct abbreviation wasn’t possible.
